At the beginning of each year, many organizations release the statistics on a wide range of topics that they have collected from the previous year. The New Jersey State Police have released their statistics on fatal motor vehicle accidents that took place in 2017. Not only do these reports show the most recent statistics, they also show comparisons over the last several years. The report also breaks down the changes in the classification and age groups of victims.
In 2017, there were 598 motor vehicle accidents that resulted in one or more fatalities. There were 631 total fatalities as a direct result of these crashes last year. This is a significant increase in the number of crashes and fatalities over the last two years. In 2015 there were 522 fatal motor vehicle accidents and 562 fatalities. The following year, there were 570 fatal motor vehicle accidents and 602 fatalities. Clearly, these tragedies are on the rise throughout New Jersey.
In 2017, Somerset County saw a total of 23 fatal accidents, resulting in 24 fatalities. In neighboring Middlesex County, there were 44 fatal accidents and 48 fatalities. Clearly, accidents in New Jersey are very serious and the increased number of fatalities year over year is worrisome.
